Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

I couldn't tell you how many times throughout my experience with diabetes I have been asked the question, "How did you first know you had diabetes?"  My initial symptoms I had before I knew I had diabetes were two main things included frequent urination and being extremely thirsty.  I would wake up 2 to 3 times during the night to use the bathroom which was obviously a big red flag.  I would also be very thirsty during the day for no apparent reason.  this went on for 3 or 4 days and finally my mom decided to take me to the doctor (I was 11 years old at the time) and get me checked out since these weren't normal things to be experiencing.  So, I went to the doctor, and they check my blood sugar.  I was 268 mg/dL and the normal range is 70 - 120 mg/dL.  I obviously didn't know this at the time but that was high than what it should've been.

Aside from my personal experience, there are a handful of other symptoms that people experience with type 1 diabetes.  These symptoms include extreme hunger unexplained weight-loss, irritability and mood changes, fatigue or weakness, blurred vision, dry skin, sores that heal slowly, and numbness of the hands and feet (Source).  It is important that if experiencing any of these symptoms to visit for doctor's office and get the situation checked out.

Type 1 diabetes is normally hereditary, meaning it runs in the family.  But for me, I have no close relative with type 1 diabetes.  This just goes to show that even if there isn't a family history of type 1 diabetes, or any disease for that matter, it is still important to pay attention to your body and if something is off, don't be afraid to tell someone.
